On 23 February 2004 the Premier Jim Bacon announced his retirement, right after becoming diagnosed with lung cancer. In his final months he opened a vigorous anti-cigarette smoking marketing campaign which bundled quite a few limitations on exactly where individuals could smoke, like pubs. He died four months afterwards. Bacon was succeeded by Paul
